Parish Lent Small-Group Program for 2020: Cancelled

Please note that Parish Lent meetings concluded on 18 March, and will not resume, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those you have the GRACE Lent Book are encouraged to continue to use it for daily reflection.

We hope that an ongoing small group may form later in the year to reflect on the coming Sunday's Gospel text, as was the case last year. This will be announced in the parish bulletin if does happen.

 

 

Friends of "Faith and Light Geelong: April Meeting Cancelled

Please note: the meeting scheduled for April has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and later meetings scheduled will be reviewed closer to their dates.

"Faith and Light gives to persons with an intellectual disability the possibility of being recognised as unique persons, and using their gifts and discovering the joy of friendship."

Faith and Light is a worldwide Christian community formed at Lourdes in 1971. Faith and Light communities  enable  people with a disability and their families, friends and other supporters to come together to share faith, food, fun, friendship and celebrate the gift of one another.

We hope to form a new Faith and Light community in Geelong, based at St Mary's. To begin, a small Core group will meet to learn, pray and plan for the monthly gatherings, usually to be held on a Sunday afternoon. Australia is part of the Southern Cross Zone, who will assist. On our journey towards forming our community, we will be using tested "Guidelines" and later a chaplain.

After a series of successful meetings in 2019, for 2020 we will be meeting on the 2nd Saturday of each month (except for April - see below), between 1.30 and 4 pm, in the Pioneer Room, St Mary's Parish Offices, 150 Yarra Street, Geelong. The Pioneer Room is located on the first floor can be accessed by lift, which is nearby the Parish Office entrance.

Dates for 2020:

  • April 18th (due to April 12th being Holy Saturday): Cancelled
  • May 9th
  • June 13th
  • July 11th
  • August 8th
  • September 12th
  • October 10th
  • November 14th
  • December 12th (Special Christmas Celebration)

Parishes providing Food Support ( excert from article on CSS Victoria webpage) Food is a basic human need. Catholic parishes across Victoria provide food support to people in need, in a variety of ways.

There are a number of Food Banks that depend on parish support.

Programs vary but the essential model is the same.

Churches provide a venue, volunteers provide labour and various support organisations provide nutritious food, transport of goods and financial support to help the programs run smoothly.

‘If the belly’s full, then other problems are not so great’. This observation by Gary Mcilvena, co-ordinator of the 'Parish Pantry' - a community-based food bank project run by St. Mary of the Angels Parish in Geelong - reflects the philosophy behind food support offered in many Victorian parishes.

The Volunteers from St Marys in Geelong also help to serve breakfast seven days a week at the local Church of Christ, which also has a food store.
